"Sweden has agreed to give asylum to a Chinese Muslim man who was held at Guantanamo Bay for almost five years.

The migration court accepted that Adel Hakimjan, from China's Uighur minority, was not a terrorist and granted him permanent residency as a refugee.

There are still 17 Uighurs being held at Guantanamo Bay. They refuse to return to China because they fear persecution there.

Activists welcomed Sweden's move and urged other countries to follow suit. "

Asylum seekers come to Sweden in record numbers

"The number of asylum seekers coming to Sweden has reached its highest point in 14 years, Sydsvenskan reports.

Half of the 3,475 asylum seekers who made their way to Sweden in October came from Iraq."

Sweden heads world asylum league

Sweden received more asylum applications than any other country in the world apart from the United States in the first six months of this year, with Iraqis making up the bulk of requests.

"Some 17,700 people applied for asylum in Sweden between January and June, a rise of 14 percent on the last six months of 2006, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees."

" The United States led the asylum application league in absolute terms, with 26,800 requests received."
